We are back from our two week camping trip. We have mostly recovered, although the house is still a shambles and my clothes are still sitting in my bag pleading to be unpacked. Were all trying to settle back into normality, catch up on lost sleep and get back into the routine of daily life.
Our trip started off great. We eased into camping life, the weather was perfect, our site was shady and the tent stayed cool for the kids day naps. We made such lovely new friends and Ezra the socialite made so many new friends. Of course, like any trip with young kids, it was hard work, and not the pre-kid 'relaxing' type of holiday from our past, but fun none the less.
But, mid way through the week, Willow came down with a fever. She was plonked in a tub of cool water and I put it down to teething and didn't think much more of it. But, the fever didn't go away. The next morning it remained, and then she threw up all of her breakfast. Ezra always got fevers when he was teething, so I just figured it was the same, but I kept my eye on her temp. When she threw up all her dinner as well that night I started to get quite worried. I stayed up too late googling, and stressing. The next morning I booked her in to see a Dr, being away from home, and having no idea about local doctors, it was just a lucky dip, and thankfully we ended up with a really great one!
By that afternoon we had pathology results back and the right medication. My baby girl was struggling, not interested in milk, and falling asleep whenever I picked her up, but trying to give me sweet little smiles the whole time. I've never had a child that's been sick like that, and even though in the scheme of things it was a fairly minor infection, it's still scary, especially when they are so little. When the Dr says things like if she doesn't improve within 24 hours get her to the hospital, my Mama heart sunk. It's just so, so hard to see your baby in pain and I was just consumed with trying comfort her and get her better.
Thankfully she improved. That night I was up every hour, she wasn't a happy camper. That started the string of fairly sleepless nights. But, I was ready to do everything and anything to get that girl back to her lovely happy self, but I exhausted myself in the process.
It was hard to get back to our relaxing laid back holiday after all that. But, we managed to have some fun in the midst of the sleepless nights, I just went back to being zombie Mum, but that's pretty normal around here.
Our holiday didn't go quite as planned. My resolve to have a great attitude the whole time and roll with the punches really got tested, and I can admit that for a little bit, I caved. It got a bit much, and a little overwhelming, and I just wanted to be home in a more 'controlled' environment. When I look through all these pictures, I know that there were so many special moments from this trip, Ezra especially had such a wonderful time, and I am still so glad we did it.

Emotional me. I got all teary eyed reading about Willow being sick. And the exhaustion you faced brought back a lot of hard memories of blurred night and days. You're incredible for sticking it out. I think I would have gone home. The photos are beautiful though. Love you guys!!
ReplyDeleteso glad to hear that Willow got back to her usual self by the end :) too bad it wasn't as relaxing/stress-free as you'd hoped, but it looks wonderful from snowy PA! my favorite photo is of Joel holding Willow while Ezra does a cartwheel. miss you guys!
ReplyDeletePoor little Willow! I'm glad you managed to have a good time in between the scariness.
ReplyDeleteDespite Willow's illness, it still looks like some fun was had! Hope your girl is better now!
ReplyDeletePoor little Willow. Sickness on holidays is just cruel. We are currently still feeling the effects of sickness. It has really cramped our holidays so far. Glad you are home and recuperating after your break away!!! xx
